Renee Thompson is trying to make it as a top fashion model in New York. She’s got the looks, the walk and the drive. But she’s a black model in a world where white women represent the standard of beauty. Agencies rarely hire black models. And when they do, they want them to look “like white girls dipped in chocolate.”
The Colour of Beauty is a shocking short documentary that examines racism in the fashion industry. Is a black model less attractive to designers, casting directors and consumers? What is the colour of beauty?
This film is part of the Work For All series, produced by the National Film Board of Canada, with the participation of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
I live in an island, so yesterday we had a really bad mist (like silent hill style) around the city ‘cause of the ocean and things like that. So what happened to show up inside of the mist? The homophobic birth mother of our 16 year old lesbian foster daughter went to the state of Kansas and fought to have her removed from our home solely due to our sexual orientation. Our foster daughter wants to be in our home and has flourished with us. We love her like she is one of our own and we want to fight to whatever lengths we can to get her back. This is about equality and it’s about doing what is in the best interest of this child. I’m a well-read, theory-analyzing enthusiast, & intersectional black feminist academic preparing to defend myself against Cathy Brennan who filed criminal charges against me on April 6th, 2013 for “violation of peace order terms.” Being that I just graduated and work less than 21 hours per week, I need a little help with defense lawyer expenses.

January 1, 2013—
Cathy Brennan filed a peace order against me on the terms of internet harassment. After I was summoned to court and the peace order was issued (which stated I was no longer able to directly contact Brennan via any outlet until June 9th), Brennan contacted a community, internet-based news outlet to further draw attention to the peace order issue. The article was published with a one-sided point of view (not including all the facts or Brennan’s extensive history of targeting transgender women and their allies), in which Brennan capitalized on the opportunity to produce libelous sources. Such sources have given her many opportunities to label me as a “violent queer” to the public as well as on the internet.PLEASE spread the word about this, but DO NOT tag Brennan when signal boosting.
